Blair wins ULMS Summer Sizzler at McKean County Raceway! Wonderling, Lunger, Heineman, Mitchell, and White also notch wins!
East Smethport, PA (July 10, 2021) by Jay Pees: McKean County Raceway got its second race of the season completed July 10th, the “Summer Sizzler” for the ULMS Super Late Models. Max Blair set the fast time of 14.525 seconds over Wyatt Scott at 14.814, Michael Wonderling at 15.025 and Eric Wilson at 15.038.
The first feature of the night was for the Field Street Boots Kids Mini Stocks with pole sitter Tierney White leading the way at the drop of starter John Powell’s green flag. White led the distance with only one caution period being needed, that coming on lap two when one of the competitors dropped a rear bumper in turn three. At lap two Raven Burkett came to second and at lap five C J Sherwood was second. The final order of finish was White, Sherwood, Burkett, Kaley Bacon, Kaden Michael, and Chance Palmer.
Next up were the Andrews Auto Salvage Mini Stocks with Curtis Rung and Kurt Babcock leading the way. Babcock led sixth-starting Holden Heineman, fifth-starting Andy Schumaker, Rung, and third starting Anthony Schoonover through lap one. Yellow was shown when Tim Fisher came to a stop in turn three. At three laps it was Schumaker leading Babcock, Rung, Schumaker, and Schoonover.at four laps Babcock spun from second in turn three, then on the restart five cars piled up. At five laps complete it was Heineman leading Mark Lawrence, Schoonover, Philip Vaughn, and Tammy Watson. Heineman held the lead over the remaining laps with Schumaker coming to second at the white flag. On the final lap Rung hit the outside wall on the front straight then flipped two and one quarter times in turn one. He was ok. The final top five was Heineman, Schumaker, Lawrence, Schoonover, and Vaughn. The scoring was based on fourteen laps completed so Rung was awarded fourth as the race was not restarted.
The Allen’s Wine and Liquor RUSH Late Model feature started with Jeremy Wonderling and Kurt Stebbins leading the way. Wonderling led lap one over Steve Dixon, Stebbins, John Waters, and Austin Houser. At lap, three Dixon was challenging for the lead, getting side by side with Wonderling at the line. By lap five Wonderling was pulling away from Dixon with John Waters still third, Dustin Waters fourth, and Paul Grigsby fifth. Grigsby experiences problems at nine laps and pulled into the infield. At halfway it was Wonderling leading Dixon, Dustin Waters, John Waters, and Houser. At eleven complete Dustin Waters got out of the groove in turn two and slipped back to fourth, then Stebbins and DJ Krug spun in turns three and four. At twelve laps John Waters was second over Dixon but two laps later Dixon regained the spot. With five to go the lapped car of Eddie Coast got sideways and contacted the leader but Wonderling held on although slipping into the reach of second-running Dixon, who challenged for the lead with three to go. Wonderling held on to the lead, going on to the win with Dixon settling for second, John Waters third, then Jason Knowles and Austin Houser filling out the top five.
The feature event of the night was for the Zimmer Service Center ULMS Late Models with the front of the field set via the ULMS “Scramble.” Max Blair and Eric Wilson brought the field to green with Blair leading Bryce Davis, Wilson, Wyatt Scott, and Deshawn Gingerich through lap one. As the laps were completed Ryan Scott and Bob Dorman got together on the front stretch, spinning into the infield. When lap two was complete it was Blair leading a side by side race for the runner-up spot between Wyatt Scott and Davis with them just ahead of a side by side battle between Wilson and Gingerich. At five laps Blair was solidly in front with Wyatt Scott second over Davis, Wilson, and Gingerich. The order remained static until a caution at lap twenty when Dorman rolled to a halt in turns three and four. Under the yellow, Wyatt Scott suffered a flat left rear and headed pit side with the top five now Blair, Davis, Wilson, Gingerich and Greg Oakes. Scott, a winner here earlier this season, was able to rejoin the race without losing a lap and began charging back through the field but spinning at turn two and again heading pit side. At twenty three laps Wilson had problems and drove to the infield. The final yellow came at lap twenty-four when Jason Dobson spun in turns three and four. With twenty four laps of the thirty scheduled in the books Oakes took over second but Blair was cruising to another win. Oakes wound up second over Davis, Wyatt Scott (after redoing the field a second time), and Gingerich.
Mark Schock led lap one of the Vintage car feature over Cody Schultz, Jeff Manners, Dale Zimmer, and Bradford’s Steve Longo with Tim Natalino taking over fifth at lap two. Natalino room fourth at lap five. At halfway it was Schock, Schultz, Natalino, Manners, and Zimmer. Schultz went wide and fell back, allowing Natalino to close in on the leaders, Schock and Schultz, who were side by side at the white flag. At the checkers Schock had a narrow, side by side victory over Schultz with Natalino third, Manners fourth, and Zimmer fifth.
The Peterson Refrigeration and A/C Inc RUSH Pro Mods started with Dennis Lunger up front and that is where he finished, up front. Lunger led lap one over CJ Irons, with Adam Ashcroft and Steve Dixon side by desiderata for third and Mike Eschrich fifth. Dixon charged to second at lap two. Four laps in was the first caution, when Greg Arnett spun in turn two. At lap five Lunger led Dixon, Ashcroft, Irons, and Eschrich and the order remained as such till lap fourteen when Dixon contacted the lapped car of Tyler Sutton in turn four with Sutton spinning and caution being shown. At lap fourteen Tyler Oakes stopped in turn three. After green Dixon spun in turns one and two with Eschrich and Al Brewer getting involved. For this restart it was Lunger leading Ashcroft, Irons, Critter Hemphill, and Timothy Schram. At the finish Brewer had gotten by Schram for fifth.
The Absolute Powder Coating Pure Stocks 20-lap feature had its first yellow prior to green when Dustin Bowen stalled out on the pace lap. When green finally appeared it was Larry Mitchell Jr leading the way over Jake Wilber, Mike Parmenter, Andy Michael, and Dusty Skinner. The only caution appeared when Josh Wilcox slowed. Michael was second at lap two with Skinner getting into the top four. The order remained the same thought to the end of the race, Mitchell winning over Michael, Wilber, Skinner, and Parmenter.
